Loved ones whose relatives laid to rest in graves vulnerable to coastal erosion say that a lack of decision on how best to address the issue is creating avoidable anguish concerning the final resting places of their loved ones.

An Impending Threat to Ancient Graveyards

The council have identified three church graveyards in the villages of Happisburgh, Mundesley, and Trimingham as being in danger of being engulfed by the ocean in the next few generations.

A newly published study on the issue details a range of possible actions, from doing nothing to disinterring bodies and reburying them in safer locations. Authorities maintain it is for local people to determine how to move forward.

“At the moment we’re in limbo. It upsets me. My parents wanted this to serve as their last home, but it isn’t going to be because of the encroaching sea.”

Projections indicate at least a portion of one graveyard could be claimed by the sea in the next 80 years, but some locals worry it will happen far earlier. “I think it’s got under 20 years, if you look at what’s occurred in the last 30 years,” one said.

Troubled by the Ghosts of Eccles

One resident remembered a school trip to the nearby village of Eccles, which has almost entirely disappeared into the sea, along with its place of worship and burial ground.

“It was possible to see human remains,” she said. “Certain people hold this romantic idea that people’s remains will just get washed out to sea. That is not the case. People will take bones as souvenirs and go grave robbing in search of valuables. That is completely disrespectful.”

“I’m worried that the same thing that happened at Eccles will happen at Happisburgh and there’ll be skeletons on the beach. I would feel disgusted by that.”

A Paratrooper's Grave in Peril

Along the coast is situated the grave of a former paratrooper who died while serving abroad. His parent expressed she could not sleep after discovering her child's final plot might one day be moved.

“It does disturb me to think this won’t be his lasting resting place,” she said. “For us it’s an important site to visit.”

She believes, new interments should stop but says it is too soon to exhume current plots. “My preference for now is to take no action and closely monitor, but an timely resolution needs to be made when a tipping point has been reached.”

Seeking Answers and Clarity

The lack of agreement over the timing and method to tackle the problem has resulted in grieving relatives feeling frustrated and worried.

Some want additional coastal protections to slow the unavoidable loss and to allow burials to proceed for now. Different voices contend the time for relocation is drawing near.

“The situation is very emotive,” a family member stated. “The council’s report was thorough, but now there’s uncertainty about how it is implemented. And everybody is washing their hands over who is responsible.”

A coastal manager said the burial sites were owned and managed of the local diocese. “Ultimately it is down to them to choose the path to take. Our role is here to help support them through that journey with communities.”

He added there was ample time to consider all the options. “This concerns many years before it begins getting lost.”

“Currently, there exists no common view on what should be done yet. We need productive local conversations to discover the appropriate solutions for each community.”

The prospect of the loss of the churches and graveyards was labeled one of “profound sorrow for the local community,” but faith leaders also spoke of a doctrine in life after death, offering a spiritual viewpoint on the temporal loss of sacred ground.
